Due to the overwhelming success of 2014, the eclectic posse of local faces and places that makes up The Newtown Locals is this year returning to the 37th annual Newtown Festival A with an even bigger and more impressive line up.
The Newtown Locals is the brain child of Mary’s Kenny Graham and Jake Smyth and is a collaborative coalition (the good kind) of the community; a gathering designed to showcase to surrounding suburbs precisely what Newtown has to offer in the way of hospitality. With every year, new businesses set up shop in the side streets and back alleys of Newtown, all with the shared goal of calling Newtown home and spreading good vibes to both locals and visitors alike. This collective of local businesses brings outstanding talent together in one place at one time, offering unique and affordable dishes and drinks for all to enjoy.
THE LOCALS THIS YEAR:
BLOODWOOD // OSCILLATE WILDLY // EARL’S JUKE JOINT // RISING SUN WORKSHOP // THE STINKING BISHOPS // OLD TOWN NEWTOWN // 212 BLU // BLACK STAR PASTRY // HARTSYARD // BREWTOWN NEWTOWN // BACH // CONTINENTAL DELI // MARY’S // YOUNG HENRYS // n2GELATO // THE COURTHOUSE HOTEL
Tasked with the unenviable challenge of reworking traditional fairground classics, the Newtown Locals will this year be working together to put the Newtown spin on 5 classic dishes, which will include: a hot chip poutine with beef and beer gravy with cheese curds, from Hartsyard & The Stinking Bishops, a chicken steak waffle with chipotle maple and candied pancetta, from Bloodwood, Mary's, Oldtown Newtown & Bach, a 'corndog' with oscilated sauce (vegetarian) from Bloodwood and Oscillate Wildly, and finally a from Brewtown and Black Star Pastry, a gelato topped crunchy caramel biscuit with freeze dried raspberry and red shiso syrup. Yum!
All profits will be donated directly to FIRST RESPONSE – Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. A frontline emergency response service, dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness and homelessness within the Inner West area.
In keeping with the spirit of community, amenities will be communal as punters will be encouraged to join strangers and make friends at the German beer hall style benches, which will be found scattered throughout the site this November.
2015’s Newtown Locals is being spearheaded by Claire Van Vuuren and Mitch Grady of Bloodwood. Claire will curate the menu’s ensuring punters get a taste of all things local, and will pass the baton on to her chosen local business to manage the crew in 2016.
In the lead up to the festival a t-shirt design competition will allow one lucky punter to have his or her designs worn on the back of these local celebrities and all merchandise will be available for purchase on the day of the festival. The winning t-shirt will be announced at Young Henry’s Friday October 9th .
2015 WINNER // BLAIR SAYER
With it’s bars curated by Mary’s and Young Henry’s, the 37th annual Newtown Festival is guaranteed to make locals proud, visitors jealous and give all a reason to roll out of bed on a Sunday morning.
Synonymous within the community as keepers of a proud track record of local engagement, Newtown Locals can’t wait to open their doors to the masses in Camperdown Park on Sunday the 8th of November for Sydney’s 37th annual Newtown Festival !!
